The Biology of the Goat
The herd

I have been raising Nubian goats since 1995 starting with two does from the Jerley Farm line. This is a production herd. I do not show nor register the does, but now breed the does with my registered bucks.

I breed my does to kid the first time as two year olds, then I milk them through for 16 to 18 months, let them rest, then breed them again if they hold up well as long term milkers. This way I have year-round milk. I market the fresh milk, cheese and healthy chevon meat.

Come and meet a few of my goats.

Thunder
This is Longman's SSM Thunder (N1351921) my senior herd sire. He has a very mellow, friendly personality which he has passed on to his kids. Owning a Longman buck was a dream come true.

Grand IllusionThis is the junior herd sire, Jowanda's Grand Illusion (N1399910) or as we call him "Guapito" which is Spanish for handsome little fellow. He is nine months old in this photo.

Clove and triplet doelings
Clove kidded with triplet doelings in spring of 2007, shown here at 6 months of age. Their sire is Thunder. I'm looking forward to watching these girls develop.
Clove and does rear view

Frances grownFrances is Clove's daughter and is one of my favorites. Shown left at 3 1/2 years old, below at 7 months and below right at a few days old you can see is very long-bodied. She is a good long-term milker. Frances has been bred with Thunder for 2008 kids.
FrancesFrances as a kid

FarahFarah is the dauhter of Frances and an unregistered son of Liberty. She is a large doe with a heavy body, long legs and unusual markings. She has been bred with Gaupito for spring 2008 kids.

LaceLace is the daughter of Clove's brother Sage, an unregistered buck and my retired doe, Clementine. She has the long, deep bodied look that I like. She holds up well as a long term milker. She was bred to Thunder this year but produced triplet bucklings.

JulieJulie is another daughter of Clementine. She has a strong wide front and is deep bodied and level. She has been bred to Guapito for spring 2008 kids. This will be Thunder's first daughter to freshen so I'm greatly looking forward to seeing what she will do.

I hope you enjoyed your visit.
