Scientific Animation & Illustration

Karin Christensen
Scientific Illustration since 1978
New Mexico View

Karin received her bachelors degree in Biology from the University of Utah in 1975. While an undergraduate she had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant in zoology and cytobiology.

Upon graduation Karin worked as an electron microscopist in mitochondrial DNA research. One surprising discovery, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, led to the first proof that mitochondrial DNA is inherited from the female in higher animals.

The combined experiences of teaching and participation in the scientific process initiated her dedication to helping people learn about the fascinating world of biology and along with her artistic talent have contributed to her successful career as a free-lance, scientific illustrator for the last 26 years.

She recently illustrated Basic Virology, Wagner & Hewlett, second edition, Blackwell Science (and the first edition) under the direction of author Dr. Edward K. Wagner from the University of California, Irvine.

"K. Christensen used her considerable expertise and incredible skill in working with us to generate the art. Not only did she do the drawings, but also she researched many of them to help provide missing details."

Using the Flash animation software Karin has been able to expand her talents to create science illustrations that come alive. From her first attempt at animation which resulted in the award winning series of the life cycle of the Herpes simplex virus to the recent creation of the Biology of the Goat CD the influence of years of experience in developing skills in research and art to produce teaching information for students of all ages is evident.

Covered wagonShe has recently been working with the 3D software, Swift 3D. Her 3D model "Wagon West" shown on the right won third place in the swiftdev August recognition awards this year. More 3D images.

She is currently working on a new series of biology animations using 3D technology and Flash which will focus on the life cycles of viruses and parasites.

Karin recently moved from Southern California to the Datil Mountains of New Mexico

Madeline "I have an fascination for the life on farms in the late 1800's. I have explored various self-sufficiency projects from raising chickens to goats and once even raised a hog on extra goat milk. My small herd of Nubian dairy goats have been my strongest commitment and greatest joy. I also care for a half dozen dogs, as many cats and a donkey.
Thanks for visiting."
